My World, the Leaf

The other day a baby lizard, a green anole barely 2 inches (5 centimeters) from snout to tip of tail, was exploring a banana leaf with the swagger of Christopher Columbus out to find the New World.

I watched him, wondering what it must be like to have one's entire world contained in a leaf.

If he lives to maturity (and that may be doubtful, for he would make a tasty morsel for a bird or mammal), his horizons will expand to include the patio and nearby garden areas.

Best wishes, little lizard!

Oh, I love this! I'm a huge fan of anoles, and they're wonderful to photograph as they explore. Great captures!

Dear Deb, these are great photos of the lizard. What a cute little fellow! And he is handsome and very pretty as well. For me it is hard to understand that many people are so phobic of lizards :-)! Anyway, I wish him best of luck as well in his life. May it be a long one, in lizard terms of course.
Warm regards,
Christina

The anoles seem to show a degree of personality missing in the western fence lizards common here - but then it's hard for our lizards to convey anything much when they speed off at the first sign of a human. I can't step 6 feet into the garden without seeing one skittering away but they seldom cock their heads to take my measure as the anole in your photos seems to do with you.

Love the little anoles! I used to have a bunch in my last garden, but I don't know if they live this far north. I have some salamanders, but I have yet to see any lizards, unfortunately. Good luck, little anole!

Your thoughts on the world and perspective for this creature was interesting; I'm certain I feel the same way as I look out on my universe each morning.

A swaggering lizard, my oh my. His world is a tad larger than the leaf. He gets to sniff the air and enjoy a bath when it rains. He experiences day and night. But, he is very small in relation to everything around him so it's surprising he has the courage to swagger.

What a cutie, and you managed some great shots! How'd you get so close? I try to take their pictures when I visit my mom in Florida, but they sure are skittish.
